Welcome to The Cold Open
Before the story really begins, there’s a moment…
The cold open.
No context. No hand-holding. Just tension, intention, and a signal that what follows matters.
That’s what this blog is.
I’m Kayona Ebony Brown, founder of Siingle, storyteller, and a multiple Emmy Award–winner. I’ve spent my career at the intersection of narrative and systems: building stories, building teams, and now building a company designed to outlast me.
I didn’t start in venture-backed tech. I didn’t inherit a studio. I built my way here through sports storytelling, through production rooms, through long nights editing and longer days creating. Along the way, I learned something most people don’t talk about:
Creativity without structure collapses.
Structure without vision suffocates.
The magic lives in the tension between the two.
The Cold Open is where I think out loud about that tension.
Here you’ll find essays on:
Building an artist-led company in a legacy industry
Raising capital as a creative founder
Leadership lessons learned the hard way
Film as business, not just art
And the internal work required to grow at the pace your ambition demands
I’m still building. Still learning. Still stretching into the leader I know I’m meant to become.
This isn’t a highlight reel. It’s a working journal from someone in motion.
If you’re a founder, filmmaker, creative executive, or someone trying to build something bigger than yourself — welcome.
The story is just getting started.
